Just Dance

That's me in the middle!

I had a reader mention the other day that she didn't know I taught dance. Dance has been such a big part of my life for the past fifteen years. I started late (at age eighteen) but loved it from the moment I started and was very serious about it. Of course starting that late in the game, I was pretty much guaranteed that I would not be 'professional.' At the time I desperately wanted to become a professional ballerina, despite my late start.

I'm so glad that God knows a lot more about what's good for me than I do. I struggled through ballet and pointe classes trying to make myself be the best. I thought I loved it but it was in jazz class that I felt 'home.'

Now at almost 33, I realize that my passion has always been for jazz and I would never have been happy as a ballerina. I still take ballet classes every now and then because the foundation of any good dancer (or teacher) is ballet.

Being a teacher is the best part about being a dancer. I realize that performing is not really for me (although I did dance in our recital last year and that was fun). I enjoy teaching my awesome girls and watching them grow each year. This year is my fifth year to teach and some of the girls were just little girls when I started. I've watched them grow into beautiful young women and am so impressed with how far they have come. I can't keep up with them!

Just one of the many awesome girls that I teach. My goal is to be as flexible as her by the end of the year!

Another one of my sweet girls. I can't get my leg up that high. Unless someone is holding it up.

It's never too late to start dance!

  4. I too teach dance, its nice to know that we have that in common. I have been dancing since I was 3 years old, and have been teaching ever since I was 16. I love jazz too but my specialty has always been tap.

  10. How great! I too started dance late in life, but didn't pursue it quite as passionately as you. Now I wish I had- that flexibility!!! I do love teaching though; it's so rewarding to see your students change and mature :)

  15. So great to get to know more about you! I danced for years growing up but I only did tap. It became way too difficult for me to keep up without the ballet background. Seeing pictures and hearing these stories definitely warms my heart.

  16. Wow, this is so awesome to read today! I danced for 9 years, and I quite when I was a teenager to play basketball (um, yeah, it was a huge change). I REALLY miss dancing! I've thought about taking it back up! I feel like there are not that many great adult dance programs where I live so I haven't made it happen yet - someday! :)

  17. I loved reading this! Last fall, I started taking adult ballet classes! It has been so much fun (and funny!) to try to learn ballet in my late 20's!

  18. I LOVE ballet! How cute are these pictures!

  19. I love this post! I was a dancer as well, and I used to teach (it was my first job)! Teaching is just so incredibly rewarding. Keep doing what you do, it's so wonderful to be able to have a job that you're so passionate about :)

  20. I love dancing! Since little I always danced, it was amazing. I should get back to dancing.

    Happy Valentine's Day

  21. So fun! I love that you're so encouraging of getting started whenever you can. God, time, and little boys willing, I really want to take some adult class next year.

  22. Oh how i wish i was a ballerina :) if only for the cute outfits!

  23. so cute! I used to take tons of dance classes, I miss it!

  24. aww so awesome - love this story! i took a few dance classes when i was younger, but didn't really get into dance until my early 20s! i started taking regular ballet classes when i was 24 and started pointe when i was 27. i thought i was too old, but so glad i did it! i sometimes take jazz classes, but i'm more at home with ballet (even though i'm obviously not going to be a professional either haha). love dance!!

  25. Oh my gosh, I love that you teach dance! I had no idea we had this in common! I was a professional ballet dancer..and teacher. I miss it a TON! Looks like you have some great classes and students...and is that a Ballet Mag t-shirt I see?
